Step-by-Step Recommendations
Clearance Needed to Install as Retrofit Under Existing Fencing:
we recommend a minimum of a 1/4" to 1/2” of clearance between the bottom of the fencing and the ground (enough space to slide the mow strip panels under the fencing and to pull them tight to the fence posts)
if there is limited clearance, (prior to installing UnderFence) we recommend using either trimmers or mowers to cut the grass/weeds beneath the fencing to as low to the ground as possible
if needed, use shovels to remove enough dirt/material beneath the fence so there is at least 1/4" of clearance between the bottom of the fencing and the ground
Installing UnderFence Panels:
2 UnderFence Panels per fence section
install/slide UnderFence Panels beneath the fencing and set them tight to the fence posts
use drill with 1/4" drill bit to drill pilot holes on both sides of each fence fence post where the panels overlap, and then push/plug in rivets to fasten the mow strip panels together (rivets only on both sides of each fence posts and not in the middle of each fence section where the mow strip panels overlap, as shown in the picture below)
in addition to the rivets, the UnderFence panels are designed (with the bends/middle channel) so that the bottom of the fencing "rests" in the middle channel to assist with keeping the UnderFence panels aligned
if installing UnderFence beneath fencing with a gap that is larger than 1.5", we have some additional recommendations to ensure that the UnderFence Panels are secured/aligned
Placement of Rivets
Listed below is an important reminder on the placement of the rivets when you are installing. We have a note on this in the install guide, but it sometimes gets overlooked.
As shown in the picture below, rivets should be installed ONLY at the fence posts (where the panels overlap) and NOT where the panels overlap in the middle of each section of fencing
If rivets are installed in the middle of each fence section, it can lead to buckling as the mow strip panels are designed to expand/contract when there are changes in temperature, etc.
Cutting the Material
In the event that you need to cut the material (for example: if a sprinkler head is located in the fence line, etc.), you can use a table saw, jigsaw, dremel or even a utility knife.
Fence Sections Longer Than 10’ On Center
If you have fence sections that are longer than 10’ on center (and end up with a gap in the middle of the fence section), we recommend cutting an additional panel and splicing in the extra material (to be secured with rivets) to cover the gap.
